Frequently Asked Questions.
Q. I have never rowed before. What is the best way to get involved? A. We are always pleased to meet potential new members, both junior and senior. The best thing to do is to look at the diary of club sessions on the "training" page of this website, identify a session that fits with your schedule and come along to meet us. The first try-out session is completely free and will typically involve a brief look around the club and our facilities, a session on one of our rowing machines to go through the basics of the rowing stroke, and then a 30-35 minute outing in one of our club double sculls for some one-to-one tuition. If you have a positive experience and want to go further, then taking out a temporary membership for £20.00 will give you up to seven sessions at Newport. This should be plenty to assess whether the sport is for you. If it is and you go on to take out a yearly membership, then the original £20.00 fee is deducted from your first subscription.
Q. What should I wear when I turn up for my first rowing session? A. Any regular sports kit will work for your first try at rowing, but closer fitting items are best. Loose or baggie clothing can get caught in the sliding seats of the boats etc, so perhaps something like some lycra leggings and a sports base layer T-shirt or similar is ideal. A fleece or lightweight waterproof top relevant to conditions should be part of your kit too. If you have some wellies, flip-flops or old trainers that are OK to get wet, then bring them along, as they will keep your feet safe whilst moving around the riverbank. Please bring a towel and a change of clothing too, in case of any unexpected downpours. Finally, a water bottle should be considered as essential kit in order to ensure you stay hydrated.
Q. I row at university and would like to carry on training during holidays and breaks. Can you accomodate this situation? A. Yes. As the only rowing club on the island to be based on the river we can certainly offer training sessions on waters that will be similar those experienced by most university rowers. We have a large number of students who come back to us during holidays, so next time you are back on the island make sure you come and see us.
Q. Once I have paid the yearly membership, are there any additional fees? A. The appropriate yearly membership at Newport R.C gives you access to all our facilities and club sessions, as well as any coaching you require. There are no separate boating fees payable. If you decide you want to go on to compete for Newport then you will need, as a minimum, a club all-in-one lycra. These are available through our suppliers and cost around £45.00. There is loads of other kit available too, but this is not essential. Entry to a regatta typically costs around £5.00 per crew member, and we usually ask for a small contribution towards ferry and travel costs. Circuit training sessions are currently free for club members, but a £2.00 per session fee applies to non-members.
Q. Are you affilliated to a National Governing Body? A. Yes. Newport R.C is afilliated to the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association, and British Rowing. Although not essential in our area, membership of British Rowing has great benefits. This includes a high level of liability insurance, subscription to "Rowing & Regatta" magazine, access to technical areas of the British Rowing website and great discounts at certain outlets, including Cotswold Outdoor Stores, Holiday Inn and reduced entry to places like Chessington and Thorpe Park. A senior Silver membership costs around £25.00 per year, and juniors are around £15.00. Youngsters up to age 13 qualify for free membership in their first year.
