CLUB SESSIONS We meet approximately two hours before high tide which gives around four hours of rowing time. Training_Sessions_2012.doc In addition to Sunday training which is on the water, we also meet on a Tuesday evening from 7pm for either circuit training, or on the water if conditions allow.
On your first visit you will be shown basic technique on an indoor rowing machine before going out on the water with one or more experienced rowers. Additionally, you will be given a brief tour of the club, and instructed in the safe handling of boats and equipment.
Our R.I.B. will be on the water during training sessions for coaching and to provide safety cover. Safety on and off the water is taken very seriously and guidance is provided. Visitors and members not able to swim at least 50 metres will be provided with an appropriate life jacket while on the water.
Beginners should wear comfortable close fitting sportswear. The club has a selection of wellington boots, but feel bring to bring your own or wet shoes if you have them.
TRAINING PLANS As you develop your rowing, you will have the option of having a weekly training plan e-mailed to your PC. Many elements of this are do-able from home, with exercise in the form of running or cycling included. There will also be set pieces which you will need to do on the rowing machines, and an outing plan designed for your crew to work through when you are on the river.
Various tests are set, for completion on the rowing machines, and the results are logged in order for you to be able to gauge your improvements. WINTER TRAINING The winter schedule at Newport begins on the first Tuesday of November with circuit training. Circuit training sessions take place at the East Gym, Carisbrooke College (formerly Carisbrooke High School) and begin at 7.00pm, finishing at around 8.15pm. After a short warm-up run we move straight in to an intense circuit. This is based around 12 exercise stations, and each participant is timed against their own ability rather than that of other members, with the aim being to improve your completion time on consecutive weeks. The circuit is tough, but there is always a lighthearted and encouraging atmosphere, and the swift increase in fitness is a great motivator to keep trying harder.
Subject to available floor space, non-members are welcome to join us at a cost of just £2.00 per session. Details are available via the contact points on this site.
In addition to circuit training, the club will be open on Thursday evenings between 7.00pm and 8.30pm for sessions with the rowing machines and weight stations. Further sessions will take place at various times based around crew training schedules.
