History

In 1863 a group of people met in Calverts Hotel, Newport to form a rowing club.  Rowers has to register at the hotel, then make their way down to the riverbank, past the end of the quays, across a cow field to a single storey boathouse. The boathouse was improved around the turn of the century by the addition of a club room above.  One of its unique features is that it projects out into the river rather than being on the bank, as is the case with most other boathouses.  In 1997 a new boathouse, complete with showers and toilets was erected on the riverbank. The clubhouse at Newport displays many copies of original photographs showing competitive action from regattas of the late 1800's, through to our most recent winning crews.

Competitve History

Although Newport Rowing Club has a rich history in competitive rowing stretching back to the early days, it would be fair to say that the last five years have probably seen somewhat of a renaissance.

Newport have previously sent crews to compete in the Great River Race in London, a 22 mile marathon along the Thames from Richmond to Greenwich, and more recently, one of the clubs eights took on the challenge of the annual Head of the River. This event is staged over the reverse of the Boat Race course and involves around 400 eights competing in a time trial over the four mile stretch of the Thames.

2011 saw three of our most promising junior ladies selected to compete, with their crew mate from Shanklin R.C, for the Wessex squad at the junior inter-regional regatta in Nottingham. The girls formed the J16 quadruple scull, and gave a very good account of themselves against very strong competition. The whole crew enjoyed the experience of competing at inter-regional level, and are hoping to be selected again for 2012.

A number of significant wins at Hants & Dorset regattas over the last five years brings us up to date, culminating in a magnificent milestone victory for our ladies junior four crew at the South Coast Championship Open Regatta at the Olympic venue, Dorney Lake. The first time Newport have returned from this prestigious event with winners medals.
